Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle and effective soft tissue technique that can help relieve chronic pain, correct dysfunction, and reduce stress. The technique involves a sequence of precise movements over certain muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves to stimulate physiological changes that can reduce pain, promote relaxation, and ultimately improve wellbeing. It is a physical healing modality that is complimentary to naturopathic medicine as it can profoundly stimulate the body to heal itself.

The technique addresses the entire body by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system and encourages the shift from ongoing stress or constant stimulation towards a state of relaxation - allowing for healing to take place. Bowen therapy is safe to use on all ages from neonates to the elderly and produces lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

How Does Bowen Work?

Bowen sessions generally last 15-45 minutes depending on the condition treated. The first appointment lasts 60 minutes with time given for initial consultation, assessments, and treatment. The technique, which involves a sequence of gentle movements and pauses, is performed over light clothing and with the patient lying down or seated to their comfort. During treatments it is not uncommon to drop into a state of deep relaxation or sleep which indicates a profound release.

Depending on the severity of the condition presented, it may take one to four treatments for the desired results to be achieved. In between weekly treatments patients are encouraged to maintain hydration, movement, and patience.
